Anyone know anything about obtaining a CCW in MN? How much does it cost to go through the process and what do you need to do?

did you have to provide your own ammo?

What No1 said. I got mine last year. I don't know where you're going for your class, but my guess is they will NOT let you bring your own ammo. They definitely will NOT let you bring your own gun.

The way I did my course was, I meet Joe at burnsville pistol range along with the other stutdents for that particular day. Did the shooting part of the course; then follow him back to where he teachs the class for 5-6 hours. I used my own gun and ammo.

Here is a link to his website.....

I got mine in Rochester last December and they couldn't stress enough NOT to bring anything. They said they couldn't afford the liability of people bringing in 'who knows what' and then having something happen. They supplied semi autos, revolvers, all of the ammo, targets, cleaning supplies, etc.

how much was your class FLSTCI71?

I got the actual permit in Olmsted County (Rochester) and it was $100. That may be a set fee anywhere you go. I also took my class in Rochester and the fee for that was $135. The training was 7-8 hours long and was held at a shooting range. They did the instruction in a classroom setting, then took us into their indoor range for the loading/unloading/shooting. There was gun cleaning and a test at the end. Like I mentioned above, they supplied everything, including coffee/rolls for breakfast and sandwiches/pop for lunch. There aren't a ton of options around here, so you may be able to get a better deal in the TC area. If you already have your own gun and if it's allowed, it sounds like what No1ford did was a great deal.

My class had husband/wives, some younger people and several older people in it. I would say at least 6-10 of them were over 50, with my buddy and me in that group. I have several guns, but none that I would consider carrying. Once I got my permit and started looking for a really good carry gun, I sort of backed off and haven't bought one yet. My buddy bought a nice 9mm, but I have been dragging my feet.

I have a Springfield XD .40 and I would consider carrying that around. Its rather large so I imagine I'd need a shoulder holster. Otherwise I would consider a subcompact 9mm for concealment purposes. I'd probably stick with the XD design.

Just curious, why do you guys need a ccw? Don't get me wrong I am definitely not anti gun or even anti ccw. I would actually like to get a hand gun some day. I just can't see any reason I would ever need a ccw permit.

i work nights at a place that has already had 5 cars broken into, plus its just natural for me to carry a weapon... guess 17 months in Afghanistan does that to you

VetteHunter, I would like to add my thanks to Rob's. Thanks!!

Rob, I originally got my CCW because I've done car deals in CA, TX, FL, NY, etc. When you're on the road like that, sometimes you're carrying substantial cash. I figured it would be good to be able to keep a pistol under the seat of the truck, just for emergencies. However, several of the states I drive through most often don't acknowledge a MN CCW. So, long story short, I have never carried yet.

ive done some research, and if you get the non resident FL permit, then you can carry in like 31 states. CA only recognizes CA residents, same with NY. theres a great website to check out to find out where your carry permit is authorized called www.carryconcealed.net

I've never heard of any ccw class where you couldn't bring your own gun - always assumed you had to, or else make other arrangements. I was just at a gun show last weekend (http://www.mwca.org/) and talked with some group from Chester (east of Rochester) who does ccw classes - FLSTCI71, that must be where you did yours? They mentioned that they had guns for people to use.

Bill's Gun Shop in Robbinsdale (http://billsgs.com) is big on ccw classes, but they're probably more expensive (just guessing). I like the little shooting range in Burnsville, too... http://www.bvpistol.com/

VetteHunter, how do you like that XD? I looked at Springfield's new XD-M at Ahlman's open house last fall in Morristown (http://www.ahlmans.com). They have a pretty cool open house, and I had a chance to actually shoot it. Did I???? Noooooooo..... I'm not sure why. There were a few people in line, but not many. Looked like a really nice gun - something I probably need eventually. Next time I have a chance like that, I won't turn it down.

Yep, that's where I did mine.

They're only about a mile from my house, so it was pretty convenient.
