I'm looking to do some work to my 82 Mercury Outboard. Just a basic tune up. I want to learn how to do these things myself, so I'm wondering if there are any good service manuals, or manuals that walk me through tune ups, carb tuning, etc. Motor currently starts and runs with no major problems, just a drop in power over the years and some idle issues. Thanks!

change plugs, oil and clean/rebuild carb and your good to go

I've used the Clymer manuals before, and they seem pretty good. The last one I got from Amazon.

Try "decarbing" the engine with Seafoam, or something like that. Mercuty and Yamaha both make something similar. I did a quick search online and found a little bit, but I think there's better info out there:

I did the whole "shock" treatment on my 87 Merc outboard, and it did improve performance. It doesn't clean the carbs by itself, though - just clean out carbon buildup in the cylinders. Outboards are weird, and even though I've torn down many 2-cycle snowmobile engines over the years, I'm still intimidated by a marine engine.

I have changed out water pump impellers, though - that's not too tough. But, I haven't gotten up enough cojones (sp?) to do the carbs.

I've done the impeller and we did the lower unit oil last years. I'm guessing I just need to rebuild the carb, but syncing/tuning them is where I have no idea what's going on. haha. I can borrow a multiple level vacuum gauge. I'm not too much of a noob but I was hoping there'd be a "Holy Bible" of outboards.
