Ford (http://www.autoblog.com/make/ford) has announced that it is recalling 150,000 2005-2006 F-150 (http://www.autoblog.com/model/f-150) pickup trucks for airbags that may deploy without warning. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration had originally opened an investigation into 1.3 million vehicles for the fault. Ford says that the risk of an airbag going off without cause is fairly small, though NHTSA has received notice of 238 instances of inadvertent deployment resulting in 77 injuries.
The airbags supposedly went off seconds after the vehicle was started, and in one case, the driver leapt from the vehicle while the truck was still parked in a driveway.
Ford says that it limited the number of vehicles being recalled because it discovered that the problem only reared its head on vehicles manufactured by the first shift at its Norfolk, Virginia assembly plant. The problem stems from an improperly installed wire that may cause a short-circuit, deploying the airbag in the process. The automaker says that the wiring was changed in 2006 to eliminate the potential problem. As a result, the recall only covers vehicles manufactured in Norfolk between November 2004 and June 2005.
