I have never run the plain old 555's.
The 555R's and the 555RII's though were VERY good tires.
I got about 10,000 miles out of the performance version tires, but that was with drag strip runs and auto-crossing.

Be aware that Nittos tend to run a little narrower than the actual measurement on the tire itself.
Both a Micky and a BFG 315 are considerably wider than a Nitto 315.

I have them on my cobra
They are good street tires, however I can spin them really easy. But they corner well and last pretty good too.

I also have a set of drag radials now, so the 555's will last longer now :)

Good info guys. I'm going between the Nittos and the Cooper Zeon RS3-S. I have the Zeon's now on my car, but got new bigger wheels and will need rubber. Looking at running 275/45/18 at all 4 corners so I can still rotate the tires. Sure, I'd like to put a little more meat in the back, but I don't think a staggered setup generally lasts very long - especially on a Mustang with lots of rear wheel torque! (:

I really like my 555's, way better then my stock tires.. But then I have never had performance tires before so I have nothing to compare to.

I'll be running the 555's up front (275/35/20). I'm still a bit undecided about the rears. Was planning on going with the 555R (295/35/20) or send my rears off to Eric Vaughn for a widening so I can run a Toyo Proxy R888 (315/30/20). At any rate, I've heard nothing but good about the Nitto's, even guys I know running the Invo series.

I'm running the Nitto NT555's 255/45-18 on front and 265/50-18 on the rear. The They are really good on dry roads but ok in the rain.

Ended up putting on Nitto Invos, 295/35/20 for the rears, 255/35/20 for the fronts. Nice tire… Now if the damn snow would melt off so I can go test them… That's damn near 2 months off at the very least!

Gone thru a couple sets of the invos. By far my favorite tired made by nitto.
