Fun In The Sun (And Rain) at Amery Auto Cross

On Saturday, June 12, 2010, nine members of Minnesota Ford Enthusiasts cruised to Amery, Wisconsin for the Annual Spring Amery Auto Cross and Speed Run held at the Amery Municipal Airport in Amery, Wisconsin. This annual event is put on by the Austin-Healey Club of Minnesota.

The day started out for some at the McDonald's in Hudson, Wisconsin for a quick breakfast before cruising as a group to Amery. Arriving early yielded good parking and viewing spots of the entire auto cross area and start of the speed run. We formed our own "Tent City" as members setup 4 tents, chairs and even a grill for the day's fun. Members brought burgers, brats, potato salad, chips, chocolate chip cookies and more.


Before the racing could start, drivers (experienced and new) walked the Auto Cross to get a feel for the turns and where the course would be running through the day. Experienced drivers helped the noobies with ideas for when and where to turn on the track and what route to take once exiting the auto cross and getting ready for the speed run.



After some concerns for the weather forecast, all members were able to get 2-3 runs completed in the morning. Lunchtime yielded our very own Chef Carson grilling up burgers and brats for all attendees (Thanks Carson!) before taking one last run in his Lightning before the lunch break.



Shortly after lunch was over, drivers were able to get one run in before the skies opened up and the rain began. After a 45 minute break, a handful of drivers from our group resumed racing on the auto cross course, puddles and all. Another 3 runs were to be had before the rain came back and ended the day.

Dinner was held at the Village Pizzeria in downtown Amery where Tom Hazen (the event coordinator) handed out certificates showing best times and high speed for the day. The results were:
